Phulkari- The Embroidery Saga Of Punjab
Phulkari, as the name suggests is a concoction of the words ‘Phul’ which means Flower and ‘Kari’ which means Work and when combined then its literal meaning is Flower Work. Buy Punjabi Phulkari Dupatta is not native to the state and was brought to Punjab from Central Asia by the Jat Tribes who migrated over there and since them this embroidery artwork wove itself into the very soul of a household.
Phulkari Embroidery is characterized by floral and geometrical motifs patterned on dupatta, odini and shawls with a darning stitch. Resonating with Punjabi Traditions, Phulkari is part of the bride’s trousseau and back in those days the number of phulkari included used to define the wellbeing status of a family.
Unlike regular embroidery, phulkari has a long process where the embroidery is done for the most part upon khaddar which was woven in narrow strips and then sewn together. Darning stitch is used in order to create motifs from the opposite side of the khaddar by colored silk threads. Also, the motifs are not drawn on the fabric beforehand and each thread of the khaddar is counted meticulously.
Phulkari is characterized by sparse motifs and over the years it gave birth to two basic types- Chope and Bagh. Bagh Phulkari has profuse embroidery where the base cloth is not visible and Chop Phulkari is usually embroidered on the border and is usually given to a Punjabi Bride by her grandmother. With the commercialization of the needle, Phulkari has gone through lot of changes wherein the design is not woven from the wrong side and the base cloth has also been replaced by chiffon, georgette and cotton. Also, Phulkari is no longer limited to Dupattas and Shawls; it has extended to saris, home furnishings, bed covers, bags and juttis.
